Audio Lingual Method

·         Drilling (Repetition, Substitution, and Transformation Drill)
·         Responding simple instruction in game

  1. Materials                   
  • Materials 1 :
v  Giving positive commands
1. Open the door, please!
2.  Sit down, please!
3. Turn the light on, please!
4. Clean the blackboard!
5. Take my bag, please!
6. Collect your homework!

v  Respond commands
1.      Ok, Sir.
2.      Ok, I will.
3.      Yes, Sir.
4.      I will do it.
5.      Of course.
6.      Certainly.

Note          : Use a Verb to give positive commands

  • Materials 2 :
v  Giving negative commands
1. Don’t jump on the bed!
2. Don’t walk on the grass!
3. Don’t run in the class!
4. Don’t be noisy!
5. Don’t be late!
6. Don’t turn off the lamp!
v   Respond commands
1.      Ok, Sir.
2.      Yes, Sir.
3.      Of course.
4.      Certainly.

Note          : Use Do not (Don’t)+Verb to give negative commands
  1. Instructional Steps    :
1.      Pre-Activity (10 minutes)
·         The teacher greets the students and students respond the greeting
·         The teacher asks the chairman of class to lead praying
·         The teacher checks the student’s attendance list
·         The Teacher explains the material that they will be learnt is about how to give positive and negative commands.

2.      While Activity (55 minutes)
·         The teacher introduces the topic will be learnt
·         Teacher gives the example how to give positive and negative commands
·         Teacher explains what necessarily needed in making positive commands by using a Verb to give positive commands and using Do Not (Don’t)+Verb to give negative commands,
·         The teacher writes some example of negative commands and the responses on the white board, for examples:
Ø  Positive command: Open the door, please!, Sit down, please, Turn the light on, please?, Clean the blackboard!
Responses: Ok, Sir, Ok, I will, Yes, Sir, I will do it, of course, certainly.
Ø  Negative commands: Don’t jump on the bed!, Don’t walk on the grass!, Don’t run in the class!, Don’t be noisy!, Don’t be late!
Responses: Ok, Sir, Yes, Sir, of course, certainly.
·         Teacher commands the students to follow what the teacher say for several times (Repetition Drill). For examples :
Teacher      : Open your book!
Students     : Open your book!
Teacher      : Open your book!
Students     : Open your book!
Teacher      : Close your book!
Students     : Close your book!
Teacher      : Close your book!
Students     : Close your book!

·         Teacher commands the students to substitute or replace one word or phrase in the example with another word or phrase that is given by the teacher (Substitution Drill). After students have followed for several times, teacher randomly points the students to do that. For examples :

Teacher      : Put your book!
Teacher      : Take
Students     : Take your book!
Teacher      : His bag!
Students     : Take his bag!
Teacher      : Bring!
Students     : Bring his bag!
Teacher      : Pencil!
Students     : Bring his pencil!
Teacher      : Throw (Ani)
Ani             : Throw his pencil
Teacher      : Ani’s pen (Elan)
Elan            : Throw Ani’s pen.

·         Teacher commands the students to change sentence or command from positive command to negative command (Transformation Drill). After students have followed for several times, teacher randomly points the students to do that. For examples :
Teacher      : Put your book!
Students     : Don’t put your book!
Teacher      : Take his bag!
Students     : Don’t take his bag!
Teacher      : Bring his bag!
Students     : Don’t bring his bag!
Teacher      : Throw his pencil! (Ani)
Ani             : Don’t throw his pencil
Teacher      : Give Ani’s pen (Elan)
Elan           : Don’t give Ani’s pen.

·         Teacher makes sure that the students will be able to accept the way to give the command. Then asks the students to work in partner.
·         Teacher asks each pairs to stand up and practice how to give negative and positive command and respond it while the other should pay attention.




3.      Post Activity (15 minutes)
·         Playing a game of Substitution Drill:
Ø   Teacher writes an example of command in the white board.
Example: Close your eyes
Ø   Teacher numbers every student by commanding student to account from one until the last number of total number of students.
Ø   Teacher give the word/phrase cards which has different word or phrase (Nouns or Verbs) to all of the students
Ø   The teacher explains about the role of the game:
Teacher will read the example of command in the white board and then teacher will call number randomly. The student whose the number that is called should to substitute or replace the word or phrase in the example of command in the white board with the word or phrase that is in his/her card. And the others students should respond or do something based on command that given.
